To make homemade yogurt, you will need the following ingredients and equipment:
Ingredients:
- 1 quart of milk (whole milk works best)
- 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt with live active cultures
Equipment:
- Saucepan
- Thermometer
- Whisk
- Glass jars or containers with lids
- Insulated cooler or warm place to incubate the yogurt
Instructions:
1. Heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat until it reaches about 180°F (82°C). Stir occasionally to prevent scorching.
2. Let the milk cool to around 110°F (43°C). You can speed up the cooling process by placing the saucepan in an ice bath.
3. In a small bowl, mix a few tablespoons of the warm milk with the plain yogurt to temper it.
4. Add the tempered yogurt mixture back into the saucepan with the rest of the warm milk and whisk until well combined.
5. Pour the mixture into glass jars or containers and cover with lids.
6. Place the jars in an insulated cooler or warm place to incubate for 6-12 hours. The longer you let it incubate, the tangier the yogurt will be.
7. Once the yogurt has set, refrigerate it for at least 4 hours before serving.
Enjoy your homemade yogurt!
